Nowadays Science as a subject
is taught in schools right from the primary education level. We use all kinds
of equipment invented by science in our daily life, but have we ever wondered
how science has made our everyday life more comfortable, richer and
progressive? If we think about the type of houses, the mode of travel and
communication prevailing at the time of our forefathers, we can realize the
magnitude of change and the tremendous improvement that has taken place. In
fact, science has influenced every sphere of life. The computer is a part of
the Science
What is Computer?:-

The Computer is an electronic
device, which was invented by Charles Babbage that can carry out
calculation and process information, handle vast amount of data effectively at
a very fast pace. A Computer can virtually carry out any activities but it
cannot think.
It’s two parts:-

| Hardwares |
The Computer has two parts.
There are software and hardware. Software means the
programmes and hardware means the electronic and mechanical pack. Most of the Computers
are digital and work on the binary system. Computer hardware is any
physical device used in or with your machine, whereas software is a
collection of code installed on to your computer’s hard drive. The internet
browser that allowed you to visit this page and the operating system that the browser
is running on are considered software.

Computers have humerous
scientific applications, including weather forecasting, diagnosis and treatment
of diseases and space navigation. The ability of the computer to process large
amount of information rapidly makes it ideally suited to weather forecasting.
Continually changing of temperature, humidity and barometric pressure from many
observation points are fed into specially programmed computers, which then
produces an up to the minute weather chart.
Computer’s use in places:-
Computers are widely used in
business and industry too. Word processing is one of the most common
applications in these fields, replacing manual and electric type writers. Text
is typed into word processor in the same way as a typewriter but is displayed
on a screen instead of being transferred straight on to a piece of paper.
Therefore, previously time consuming corrections are made in the text before it
is printed.
Computers have become
indispensable in all spheres where they have been introduced. In all major
cities the traffic signals are computer controlled for smooth traffic flow. If
we dial any number for directory information, the operator gives us the
information within seconds. This is possible because all the information is
stored in the computer. Most of the bank have
stopped issuing passbooks for account holders. Instead they use the
computer to keep data of all accounts and their transactions. They issue a
transaction statement to the account holder. In many cities around the world,
each police station is equipped with at least a computer where records of all
criminals are made available. This helps them to keep track of all criminals
and their whereabouts. The ads seen on TV are all computer created. During
elections we see lots of programmes where two people in two different parts of
the country are discussing with each other.
It’s disadvantages:-
Use of computers has its
disadvantages too at the indivisual as well at the social level. Excessive use
of computers can damage eyes and long hours of work on the keyboard can lead to
joint ailments and spondylitis. Even computers are being used to develop
dangerous lethal weapons.

Super efficient computers are
increasingly making their use indispensable in homes, schools and offices in a
developing country like India. Computers are here to stay. It is up to us to
use them for the benifit and betterment of mankind.
